  “Aw,” Disappointment filled me as she turned to go. “Well, I’ll see you later.”

  “Only if you’re lucky,” she teased and continued on.

  The other two agreed to meet me in my room and we went our separate ways. As I walked back to my apartment, Zanj and I collaborated to make up a story to explain my tracing ability without telling Xavier about Zanj. Of course, I’ll tell you, good reader, how it actually works.

  There’s a type of magic called Tracing Magic and it’s usually used to determined the base components of physical objects. This makes it the favorite of any magician planning on studying alchemy. It can also be used to determine the type of spell cast on objects and even who cast it but it typically only works on tangible objects. So technically, a magician can use these kinds of spells to figure out what kind of charm has been placed a piece of jewelry or a weapon.

  When Zanj and I work together, he can actually collect the residual magic left in the air after a spell is cast and concentrate it to a point that I can then trace the magic itself. Once I’ve traced the spell, Zanj can then determine the proper activation sequence allowing me to throw the spell right back at the original caster.

  Yeah it’s confusing, I know. And I’m sure you’re wondering why I let Zanj handle the activation sequences of almost every other spell but do the tracing myself. That’s simply because, Tracing is one of the two types of magic, I’m actually better at than Zanj.
